The advantages of using cullet The use of cullet reduces: - energy needs
- carbon emissions
- raw materials required
- landfill waste
At the same time, it increases the production capacity of the factory. For every tonne of glass produced using cullet (c.50%), 300 Kwh less energy is required than for glass produced from virgin raw materials. An increase of 10% in the use of cullet results in a reduction in energy consumption of 5%.
A single tonne of glass produced using virgin raw-materials results in 185 kg of carbon dioxide emissions. When cullet is used there are no carbon emissions arising as a direct result of the process. This is because cullet does not contain any carbonates.
Every tonne of glass cullet reduces the need for raw materials by over 1.2 tonnes.
The use of cullet also increases melting capacity. So a rise in the usage of cullet by 10% increases the melting capacity of the factory by 5%. |
